Flexible Sigmoidoscopy in Cypress, TX
What It Is
This test is similar to a colonoscopy but only looks at the lower part of the colon (the sigmoid colon and rectum).
Why It's Done
- To screen for colon polyps and colorectal cancer
- To evaluate symptoms like rectal bleeding or changes in bowel habits
Before Your Procedure
You will need to complete a bowel preparation to clean the lower colon for optimal visualization. Depending on your doctor’s recommendation, this may involve enemas or a limited bowel prep.
During Your Procedure
In many cases, this procedure can be performed without sedation, although sedation may be used if needed. The doctor inserts a flexible camera through the rectum to examine the lower colon.
After Your Procedure
Because sedation is often not used, many patients are able to drive themselves home and resume normal activities the same day. If sedation was used, plan for a driver, as you would for a colonoscopy.
